Herbs in our Apothecary that start with the letter “C” includes two plants in the same family, and many with beautiful blooms that can also grace our flower gardens.

Calendula blossom

Calendula – Made from the whole flowering head, this tincture is anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and helps soften lymph congestion. Dilute for external use. Do not use during pregnancy.

California Poppy

California Poppy – This plant is known for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory and sedative properties. It is also useful for neuropathy, neuralgia and other nervous or spasmodic conditions, including restless legs. The tincture is mildly sedating, but safe enough for children, and although it is a poppy, it contains no opium.

Cat’s Claw

Cat’s Claw – Strengthens immune system, anti-inflammatory, specific for arthritis and muscle pain in Lyme disease.

German Chamomile

Chamomile – Anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, nervine, mild sedative (safe for children – dilute in hot water). Indigestion, bloating, colic.

Chinese, or Baikal, Skullcap

Chinese Skullcap – Also called Baikal Skullcap. Anti-hepatotoxic, anti-viral, helps reduce inflammatory conditions of the brain and central nervous system (CNS). Helpful with sleep disorders. Used for symptoms associated with mycoplasma, a tiny virus-like organism that can accumulate in the endothelium causing pain and inflammation.

Corydalis “Yan hu suo”

Corydalis – This plant is in the poppy family but does not block pain receptors like opiates. Corydalis has been shown to positively affect the nervous system. It has great value for pain relief from fibromyalgia and other nerve-related pain, and also promotes relaxation provided by the pain relieving properties.

Cryptolepis plant

Cryptolepis – Broadly active to gram-positive bacteria: campylobacter, malaria, resistant staph, as well as dysentery and other amoebas. Also active with gram-negative shigella, enterobacter, salmonella, E. coli. A good herb for helping fight infection. No reported side effects.

These tinctures are available in 1-ounce, 2-ounce and 4-ounce dropper bottles. In addition, we can make custom blends such as for Herbal Pain Management which contains both California Poppy and Corydalis plus an herb called Incarvillea which is not on the website but is nevertheless available in a combination as mentioned.
